New shortcuts for 2.8 are not good, and worst of all dos not help new user as it claims.
New shortcuts for 2.8 are not good, and worst of all does not help new user as it claims.
Changing the different modes to (1,2,3,4...) its not good idea, first of all “tab” was a TOGGLE system, and it was great, why change it? Keep the tab for “ object mode <-> edit mode”, that you are using all the time for modeling (polygons, nurbs, metaball...), rigging and use 1, 2, 3 for texture paint mode, sculpt mode … but as a toggle system! We don’t need a shortcut to go to object mode.
Then “spacebar”, why it bring the same big buttons that you already have in the 3D view??, search tool is a great tool, for beginner specially !! if you don’t know how to do something you just start to type, for example “cam...” and you haven't finish and already you can see all the options for the camera object.
2.8 shortcuts must be:
TAB for object mode / edit mode toggle.
1 for texture paint / object mode toggle.
2 for weight paint / object mode toggle.
3 for sculpt / object mode toggle.
4 etc…
Spacebar for search tool

Well, if we can customize the keys I don't really care. I was using the "LEFT" side numbers for the views because it is much more natural for me to use my left hand than the right which is on my mouse or pen. I have all the modes in a Pie Menu.
I dislike the 2.8 shortcut change for a different reason.
The devs do have a point here about that we have more than 2 modes, and a toggle function only covers 2. Which are object mode and edit mode. Depending on the work people do, that’s completely not enough.
However, the dev’s approach of using 1 to 0 number keys each to toggle an individual mode is rather, throwing out what was a great convenience, and replaced it with unnecessary redundancy.
We had layers mapped to number keys and they were, IMO, more useful, and more frequently used.
Pie menu on the other hand is more intuitive than un-labeled hotkeys(it shows you the options), more efficient & ergonomic than reaching out to press a hot key that’s far away from the subsequent keys you might want to press(and the fact you can execute pie menu command as fast as clicking a button) and more user-friendly due to it’s only 1 key to remember for all mode select.
The fact is, we rarely frequently change modes. When we do, we’d be definitely doing some work inside that mode. That means there are no need to be able to transition from mode to mode as fast as possible. Just another reason I can’t wrap my head around the choice of using all the number keys for mode select. We had better uses for them.
Nonetheless, we can configure hotkeys the way we want in the user preferences. So there is no need to argue about it. But we need to talk about the features we once had with those hot keys.
I have created the input configuration file for 2.8 if you wan to try it: lluc3d.com/clients/tabrigth.rar
