Destructive Extrude. Sketchup like "Push".

Hi there, This tool is pretty darn cruicial, and should even be the default Extrude tool behaviour.

Now, when trying to do stuff that a "Push" tool could do instantly, you have to extrude, and then spend a lot of time cleaning up the mess.

It's extremely useful in any hard surface modelling. For example, for making Window or door holes on walls.

Agree. That would really speed up HS modelling. You can still do booleans, but this way is more practical and intuitive.

I don't consider this "done", because the implementation is VASTLY inferior and buggy.

simon.p.heggie

This is already in the latest version of Blender. Please set status to done

I'm not sure which other addons have been mentioned that do this. I tested:

<b>Extrude and Reshape</b> - it does work in 2.79.

<b>Mesh Edit Tools 2</b> has a Push/Pull feature also, and the addon is available on blender.org and works with 2.79. en.blender.org/index.php/Extensions:2.6/Py/Scripts/Modeling/Extra_Tools

Both of these have the same problem - left over edges if you push a face past a second face (both of these work fine on the first outside face, so better than a plain extrude). These do not have the "destructive" part that the destructive extrude has. Also neither of these will push/pull more than one face at once, but no problem if you join them (ngons seem to work OK).

I posted this here because they are available now, and don't require a fix be made to work (but probably will for 2.8). In any case, this should be a basic modeling tool in Blender.

I guess you are looking for this (?) github.com/Mano-Wii/Addon-Extrude-and-Reshape

Agree. There's a similar behavior in Zbrush's Zmodeler tool, you can just push/extrude polys without need to delete inbetweens. I believe it is possible to replicate this with addon, maybe there are already some like HardOps that can already do that, but native support might be worthwhile.

its under copyright

@dodododorian: Pretty sure, It would only be a copyright issue if the blender devs copied the code, not if they made similar behaviour. If Modelling tools could be copyrighted (so other apps can't replicate them), blender would have no tools at all.

@visprotis: i love sketchup too, i would really like to have similar tools, but visibly sketchups devs are douches

dpdpforlife

@dodododorian: There are already two addons that do this in Blender, one paid and one that asks for a small donation, so it seems like if google wanted to go after someone for this they would have done it already. Also the language is so vague, that it could almost apply to any modelling operation that involved extruding edges or 2d shapes. So just about any 3d Cad program would violate this patent even though pro-e predates SketchUp by at least 20 years.

Pro-e has been able to "Push/Pull a plurality of edges" for decades.

testure

@dodododorian: I'm not a patent lawyer, but I would guess that the usage is different enough that it doesn't really apply here. They're pretty specific in their patent about the usage leading up to the push/pull action, and this addon's usage is pretty different right up until the last step since you already need underlying geometry there to work with- it's just an interface for existing boolean functionality. That being said- I believe the patent expires in November of 2020, so maybe we'll have it for Blender 2.9 :P

what copyright? here the idea is not even using a plane. but if you can do it in blender and automatizing it what copyright anyway? it won be a copy but the association of several tools to have the same result. and other software are already doing it since a while. at this moment we could have a copyright on everything created with a tool. this is wind.

* @dpdpforlife * you can't have copyright on a such thing because you can't do it exactly the same way in 2 different softwares. and in Blender we can pretend it is just the automation of something people are used to do in their own work. so first addon then implemented to share it to more people. such patent won't work and design spark was doing it too in a different way and much better. this patent could work "inside" of sketchup lol
