Different Matcaps as Viewport Materials

Allow the selection of Matcap (Material capture) as viewport materials for Each individual objects. This will improve the quality of Life and also make "Workbench Engine" Much more useful.

The following Images was modelled and Rendered in blender using viewport/workbench engine and Matcap Solid shading DLSR Camera8nddd.jpg DLSR Camera6fff.jpg DLSR Camera11gg.jpg DLSR Camera9f.jpg

Now you can imagine the Possibilities when one can add different objects with different Matcaps as a viewport material too. It's going to be Amazing!

It is possible to make regular materials in eevee that use your matcap images

True. And personally, I would worry about the UI required to allow to setup different matcaps to different objects as in this proposal.

Though admittedly, it would be nice to have a form of matcap projection out of the box in the shader nodes instead of requiring the user to figure out how to make one or copy from the web.

EEVEE is slow cus it's more complicated, Workbench Engine/Viewport is faster and would be preferable

Then, how do you conceive the UI necessary to perform such a thing?

It would be found in the viewport shading tab in the "Properties Editor > Material > Viewport"

I'd rather have (A) the Workbench Engine promoted to a first class citizen and added to the Material Output node Target list. (B) the ability to turn off more EEVEE features until it's basically identical to Workbench.
