Image Editor Enhancements

Just some small stuff to improve the Image Editor...

  • Selection tools like box/lasso, allowing us to select/copy/paste/move portion of the image (if the box selection could display stuff like golden ratio/thirds/fourths... it would be a nice touch..)
  • Transform tools to move/scale/rotate the image/portion of the image
  • Ability to crop the image from a selection
  • Create custom selection by typing the exact dimensions
  • After creating a selection we should be able to move the "box" around/extend the edges etc...
  • Rotate the image clockwise/counter-clockwise
  • A/B Image Comparisons. To compare 2 images, with a draggable vertical/horizontal line
  • Basic filter/color grading stuff like saturation, brightness, contrast, exposure, gamma, RGB curves etc...

With this line of thinking there's no point on improving anything, right?

There's a point in improving core 3D features. Not features well covered by other image and video applications which are also freely available, and are already better choices for such tasks.

Sorry mate, but I don't agree with this. It just makes no sense to me.. Every part of Blender deserves to be improved, not just the 3D aspect of it. Image Editor/VSE etc, are equally important imo... The less we jump to other applications to do basic things like that, the better... But it's ok if you don't see it that way... people have different opinions.. 👍

Blender has repeatedly stated that they want to become an all in one solution. Grease pencil already has introduced more 2D functionality that is beyond 3D. The texture and material improvement project has planned many of these things as well. They just currently don't have a developer for it.

Also, "Use external software", "that's not the scope of Blender" and "there's a plugin for that" are your best way to having a software that does nothing different or better than existing software.

i dont understand this .. theres so many people creating scripts and willing to create stuff for free but blender is always missing enough devs for every departement it seems..

Creating a Python plugin != integrated core development It's one thing to create a Python Plugin if you don't have to coordinate or adhere to deign and code guidelines or if you can simply abandon the plugin whenever, alltogether. A compete, performat image editor also would easily go beyond a python plugin, I assume.

Those features should be there from the start already. No point calling it image editor without those basic feature.

I have to mention that you can do a lot of things from the compositor already:

Sure, but the workflow is very different there and too complex for quick edits. The image editor needs those simple standard tools. This is the image editor after all.. 😉
