User Preferences > Themes Cleanup Possible ?

It is confusing and tedious to theme blender, for eg. the Header Color has to be changed for every editor type if u wanted change all the Header colors.

Most of the Colors can be changed in the Theme Space Settings. But currently the Theme Space Settings is present in almost every Category.

I propose the Theme Space Settings be moved to the User Interface Category which controls mostly how blender looks. I don't think that it would be difficult to implement, but i could be wrong.

This will make it fairly simple and fast to theme blender, especially for new users. I don't know if something like this is being implemented in 2.8, but nothing has changed in the latest builds.

This is actually planned! Definitely something we want to work on.

The User Preferences is currently being re-designed , and with it each of the sections in the user preferences, including theming.

When I was making my mockups I limit myself to use as few colors as possible:

  • Text (+ active)

  • Background

  • Accent (+ active)

  • Input (text + background)

  • Tool Button (text + background)

To start with this is what most of the UI theming could use (without going into details per editor of course).

@alberto3d.1984: Q: Will there be way to filter or search? Yes, the idea is to have a search input right in the sidebar with the categories/groups, as shown in the mockup by Julian.

Do you use different colors for common UI elements in blender ? I personally would not have different colors for Headers, common ui elements or Text Colors in every editor.

But a possible solution is to have a MASTER Theme Space Settings in the User Interface Category .. and overrides in each section ( as it currently is )

This would a add a bit more complexity, but as its pretty complex already I don't think it would matter. Also it would not be that easy to implement while not fixing the complexity problem.

How about a few main color selectors that cover almost everything? The more granular color controls could be expanded down from the main colors by clicking a plus next to them. Something like that maybe?

LloydAlmeida Author

@quargzon: Theme Space Settings is already there .. just separately for each editor type, so its tedious to change.

Thats why im proposing to put the Theme Space Settings( Which changes most of the look) in to the first Category .. User Interface ( Where you can change almost everything else)

Quargzon

@darkstarmail: I got that. What I'm suggesting is that each entire category has one "master" color selector that sets all the more specific colors beneath it.

That way, you choose the main colors you want, and then you can perform any minor adjustments you'd like.

So how would you accommodate the scenario where a theme designer wants different color choices for each editor? Or do you think that would simply never happen?

Maybe it would be better to introduce a "macro" category in the themes section where you can baseline a general color scheme for all editors... then you can drill down and make individual modifications from there.
