OPTION TO LET SPACEBAR BE AN EXTRA MODIFIER KEY!
VOTE UP IF YOU LIKE TO HAVE AN ADDITIONAL MODIFIER KEY!
If you don't use the search function or the tool menu, why not have your spacebar be an extra modifier key, so you can have a gazillion more hotkey combinations. If you are the one putting SPACEBAR on "Play/Pause"... ಠ__ಠ

Ideally, all the functions you use would be mapped with a specific hotkey for easy access and fast activation. The search function is surely useful, but let's all agree, it is slow, and is not worthy to take up a big chunk of physical space... ummm... I meant, THE SPACEBAR. But if you use that for "TOOLS", like a cave man(no offense), I have no argument to make about it.

You used up almost every key on your board possible to speed up your workflow, and there is no other keys you can trade with other than SPACEBAR... Welp, it's your chance now!
IT IS ABOUT FAST, FASTER, FASTEST.
Ofc, we have to keep the ability to type " " when blender is under typing mode. Like in the console or text editor, etc.

More beneficial in the long run would be to allow any key to be a modifier.
Maybe the search could be tied to some other button. As an idea using the spacebar as modifier key seems very powerful although I really don't want to learn any more keyboard shortcuts. Using the space bar as search is very powerful as well. Plus I think the spacebar is already used as modifier key and I see no reason why it can not be both. If you use it as a modifier key then you press it with some other button(s). If you just press spacebar you get the search or some other thingy.
@o7216059: The benefit of spacebar being a modifier key is that, it's BIG and at the center of the whole keyboard, making any key-combination easier to press than all the modifier keys in the corner.
About using spacebar as both, I've had issues mapping functions to keys "on release", usually both the functions will execute.
Alternatively, I do think Search function is very useful, but the Spacebar is more useful as a modifier because of its location on the keyboard. I feel the search function would work equally well on the Function keys or simply "Enter" key.
@Brent Liu: What about using the function keys as modifier keys? Try it. F4-g for example feels very natural.
