Box and lasso select to make active component
Make ability to box/lasso select vertex, face, edge to make active selection. Now is only make active by clicking on component.

Good point, but how Blender should choose which one is active?
Actually this problem exists even in object mode. If you create 3 objects, then select first, deselect it, then using the box-select select second and third - you have two selected objects but none of them is active. It is very frustrating.
I reported this as a bug, but got a response that it's a feature. Weird things is that Blender doesn't set it to active if you box-select just one object.
The base idea is there, but I think there needs to be a lot more thought about how this would work. Specifically, as @verderblich pointed out, how does Blender decide which of the box selected objects is the active one?
* @Jason van Gumster * There are places where the selections Blender makes are arbitrary. For example, when there is a branch in a chain of bones, the bones that are selected with L will include the chain until the branch, and one branch- whichever is earlier in the armature.edit_bones bpy_prop_collection.
So what I'm saying is, it could arbitrarily pick the first in the bpy.data.objects list, or the first in the mesh component lists.
* @Josephbburg * Understood, but I think that should be an explicit part of the proposal... and if it's arbitrary, that's almost as bad as just keeping the previous active object, whether selected or not. That, at least, is predictable.
In any case, I don't disagree with the premise here, I just think we can think through the ramifications and come up with a solution that gives predictable results.
* @Jason van Gumster * For most tools, it should be possible to pick the object or component that is nearest to the mouse pointer at the beginning of the operation. Or nearest the center of the box. I don't think there's a way to get away from arbitrary behavior here, but that at least would be more predictable.
There's a lot of edit mode tools that share this papercut. For example, inserting edge loops.
