Custom wireframe colors
I think it's time for the custom wireframe colors feature to get implemented. People have wanted this for a very long time. There's been a lot of discussion about pallets and group colors etc. but I guess nothing concrete was ever decided upon.
Here is my proposal for how it could work:
-
Object groups use a color pallet set by the theme, similar to the bone groups for armatures. You would also have the option to set custom colors if you wanted.
-
Materials would have the option to have custom wireframe colors similar to how they can have custom solid view colors. No pallet needed here because the wireframe color should represent the material color.
-
In the display tab of the properties panel in the 3D View there would be an option to show group colors or material colors.
-
Anything that doesn't have a color assigned to it uses the default wireframe colors (e.g. objects that aren't in a group when in group display and objects that don't have a material color when in material display).
This way you get a color pallet , custom colors , group colors and material colors .
I'd like to know what people think about this solution, did I miss any use cases?

This is a looong requested feature for Blender. I know it has been really controversial in the community, but I think it would greatly improve the work-flow.
Hope it gets reconsidered for Blender 2.8.
With 2.8 it appears that there is an excellent opportunity to implement custom wireframe colors in eevee in the materials tab -> viewport display sectioin
Really hope that now with blender 2.8 we do get a custom wireframe colors solution.
