Bevel Sequentially By Bevel Weight

Hey,

first time posting something here, so if anything is in the wrong category or I messed up in some other way, please tell me and I'll change it.

I rely heavily on the bevel modifier using bevel weights for high-poly models, but there is a weird behaviour when two edges with different weights meet. Here's what I get when edges with a bevel weight of 1.0 meet with edges using a bevel weight of .25:

Here's what happens when I bevel these edges individually in two steps, first the edges with a bevel weight of 1.0 and then the ones with a weight of .25:

Without any understanding of how the bevel modifier works, I'd assume that it bevels all edges at once multiplying the "Offset" value by the bevel weight. Having the option to have the modifier bevel all edges with different weights in sequence starting with the highest weight would give a result like the one in the second picture, which I assume is what most people are expcting when using the bevel modifier.

I'm not entirely sure how that would affect neighbouring edges of a loop with different weights, but I assume using an average of the two weights for the connecting vertex could do the trick. Again, all this is strictly from the perspective of somebody with no insight into the code, so excuse any naivety.

Alternatively, having Edge Groups as well as Vertex Groups that can be used by the bevel modifier would allow for similar results.

Thanks for your time.

Both, beveling by sequential weight and edge groups would be great!

agreed, this drives me crazy as well. makes the bevel modifier all but useless for most situations imo.
