Make Masking in Paint texture better
This might be the most minor request I've ever wanted. But it's a quality of life that goes a looong way similar to having a lock feature for camera.

I wish by activating 'paint mask', it's default response is having no mask set yet. Having no mask selected means I can still paint until I do mask them. And having selected faces from Edit mode is consider as a mask that is ment to not be drawn in. Basically the opposite behavior of what we currently have. In it's current behaviour, it's the opposite expectation of having a mask to not be able to paint over.

using the X-ray mode on, I expect it to also select thru even the back side of the geometry.
- In addition, When 'X-ray mode' is on in 'viewport shading', there are some shading facet artifacts that I get confused of whether if it's selected or not. If that's a visual bug, I hope that least masking has a more pronounced way to be noticed, like giving it some textured crosshatching overlay.

Mask brush is confusing and I'm assuming I can just brush a standard mask shape, but it requires me to make a stencil, but I do not know how to set up a default one. So I'm stuck just using mask select/tweak tool.

Have you tried the Mask Tool itself? The Mask Tool allows one to paint to a mask that is outside of the shader, specified in the Stencil Mask up on the top bar before turning on Cavity Mask.
