Per edge bevel weighting

Sometimes you may want to vary the width of bevels. It's good to maintain quads and edge flow where beveling occurs to reduce shading artifacts. So the answer in some cases would be to bevel the entire edge loop with varied bevel size. However, this isn't possible in the current 2.8 build.

In summery, It would be nice if each vert/edge would be able to store a unique bevel size.

Orphydian

is this coming after the recent max chamfer updates ?

* @Orphydian * 1:10 of first video; exactly what I was asking for. Is that possible in blender, or to be requested? Thanks for showing me things. Mind if I included these videos in the original post? (Credit's given)

Orphydian

* @simon.p.heggie * yeah used them. Plus you can search the autodesk documentation for these updates to include a better explanation

Well there are solutions, like using multiple bevel modifiers targeting different vertex groups, angles or weights. And this will be even more powerfull once edge groups and face groups will be implemented (and it's planned AFAIK).

* @-L0Lock- * where did you see that ?

Lauloque

* @Orphydian * here and there on RCS, and I think also on devtalk.blender.org and on developer.blender.org

Yeah! this would be amazing! It kind of worked in 2.7, but then stopped working in 2.8, and just averages it {attachment bevelModBugmp4} I was impressed with blender when I had that kind of control, it makes all the sense and is really powerful, but I think the implementation was not perfect, and was a "lucky" feature and it seems they discarded it for coherency :( hope it gets thought better and implemented in an optimal way!

* @Frederico Martins * make a bugreport!

frederico4d

* @Sergey Ivanov * I did, and it was not considered a bug, they changed the behavior intentionally for coherence :( it worked for me, but I guess it was inconsistent in other cases.

simon.p.heggie Author

* @Frederico Martins * This is exactly what I'm talking about. Mind If I used your video as an example in the first post? (credit given of course) What is the more coherent way of doing this then I wonder?

frederico4d

* @simon.p.heggie * you can use the video of couse! I think this could work better maybe with a mix of the current Bevel Weight with vertex groups, this way you could set specific edges to be beveled and then set the weight of the bevel, more specifically per vertex.

Vyach

* @Frederico Martins * it was working 2.79 because it was bugged: one side of edge have different size of bevel than another. And in 2.79 daily or 2.80 it was remade so, that neigbour edges limit each other`s minimum.

Sadly group-weights do not work for bevel modifier. And we have unnecessary separate weights for bevel-edges and bevel-vertexes.

ammusionist

Could you perhaps post a mock up or some more detail around how the UI would need to change to manipulate individual edges during bevelling?

* @ammusionist * Yeah sure, I'm at work now but will get around to this soon.

Weight for one-edge bevel working strange now. I made a report: developer.blender.org/T66184

1to3fall5

isn't it already achievable by using the edge bevel weight?

simon.p.heggie Author

* @1to3fall5 * Edge bevel weight is the subject of the topic. It wasn't clear?
