Apply multi-user modifier

Currently you cannot apply modifiers on multi-user meshes. For example if you have two linked duplicate (multi-user) cubes and you try to apply a boolean modifier on one of them Blender will protest. I would like to see this behavior changed so that an applied modifier just gets applied on the selected mesh and then the results get propagated to the linked meshes as well. Going back to the example with the cubes you'd apply the boolean modifier on one of the cubes and you'd see the same result on the other one.

Changing this behavior would make the modifiers more consistent with the rest of the implications of using multi-user meshes where if you change the selected mesh it will be reflected on the others as well. If this is done in order to protect the user from making mistakes then I would propose adding a warning message similar to the one about applying modifiers that aren't first in the list.

I attached an image of the error I'm tired of seeing.

Imo when trying to apply multi-user data there should be and popup with options:

  • Apply changes to multi-user
  • Make single-user and apply

Like proposed in blender.community/c/rightclickselect/Lscbbc/apply-transform-on-multi-user-object-should-offer

@Pawel Piotrowski: Yeah that's a good point, would give the user a bit more flexibility.

This! Yes

It's so important for this to be implemented, please! It makes every workflow that uses linked meshes SO MUCH faster...

This is such a dumb error.. and all the "workarounds" are bullshit. I hope we can get some sort of fix.

Draise

I WOULD SO LOVE THIS.

This would be great
