LOD Functionality
I've been tinkering with the Lodify addon and it really seems to fill an obvious gap in Blenders scene management -

Is there any reason why this clearly fairly simple functionality is not built in to Blender?

Since lodify isn't maintained at all, and i'm struggling with lot of python file to offload my 10B scene depending on camera (making things sometime 5x longer than an automated solution) i'm simply upvoting and hoping someone see my answer.
LOD is a complex topic. There isn't a single algorithm that works for all cases. Having it as an add-on allows artists to select what is a good algorithm for them.
The add-on developer decides if he is willing to support his add-on in default Blender.
The addon in question does not actually generate any LODs, it's more of a management/scene optimization tool, where a mesh can be substituted by another, lower quality option, in the viewport (and even in rendering), this is actually very useful for working with animations, because using something like the decimate modifier on a mesh causes the modifier to be re-calculated every animation frame, where the addon has you create a decimated version of the mesh ahead of time and then substitute it with a single click.
