Set Default Image Color Space to Non-Color Data for Metallic, Roughness, and Height maps on Node Wire Hookup.
The settings for the materials should already automatically have that set when wired up to an Image Texture.
After manually changing that setting numerous times you feel that it should automatically be set, especially since that is the type of data that is expected anyways.

my biggest issue is that it resets to the default when loading a new image into the image texture node. It should be the same until you change it manually.
Nope - in complex materials same texture node can be used as instruction for few different inputs.
well you could always learn python scripting it's not that hard also there is node wrangler addon for automatic pbr textures importing
Metallic is a colour, no?
The problem with things that happen automatically like this is that it's less clear to the user what's going on. Even with really good documentation, there would have to be some kind of interface hint to indicate what's happening. Otherwise, unexpected results become a lot more difficult to debug.
