Better support for input devices

Hi

I'm a new Blender user. I use a roller mouse because a regular mouse is bad for my neck.

I find it a bit difficult to use a roller mouse together with blender because it is much harder to use right and middle mouse buttons compared to using the left mouse button. I have not tried to use a touchpad or other devices. But I imagine it is quite similar with a touchpad.

I use a PC and one simple improvement that would work for me personally is to allow me to combine Alt to emulate the middle mouse button and use left mouse button to select. That way I could do a whole lot more with just the roller bar itself and the left mouse button is also easy to press with my other hand.

I do not know why it is not allowed to combine these two features in the settings. As soon as I switch to "Select With Left" the option to emulate a 3 button mouse is disabled. Seems like I can customize a lot of different things in Blender so this one puzzles me.

Different users probably use different input devices differently so I can only speak for myself. But I can only see more input options as a good idea.

Maybe you can find a convenient solution by configuring the most needed operations separately to different key/mouse combinations? I mean, what you can do in User Preferences -> Input.

@o.mangold: Hmm, there are a lot of settings there that might work out for me. Is there any reason why it shouldn't be allowed to combine left select with emulate 3 button mouse?

Never mind. Just learnt how to do a loop selection which is alt+select. So that wouldn't work. There probably are other similar cases.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Your neck?

@simontmonroe:

Yeah, I have a bad neck so I can't use a regular mouse for extended periods or it gets tense, leading to headaches etc.
