Infinite grid for the UV editor
With the upcoming UDIM features, it becomes increasingly necesary to have an infinite grid for the UV editor, as other software already has. UDIM uses the space outside [1,1] by definition, so it's useful for the grid to be visible. It's also very common to use the UV space outside of [1,1] in game development, shading and texturing.
Ever since the separation of the UV editor and the Image editor, I've been waiting for more features and polishing to be added to justify this separation, which I was initially against. This could help win more people over as to why it is necesary. There are also other improvements that I'll propose in other posts
Proposal:
Add an infinite grid while also giving a distinct border overlay to the main [1,1] square
Extended proposal:
More grid overlay options could be added, like an option to turn on or off a distinct border for the standard UDIM tiles, an option to turn on or off the infinite grid itself, an option to show numbers and colors on each axis, and so on. These could be added on an overhauled Overlay popover, similar to the one in the 3D viewport's header, which currently is a panel in the N sidebar instead
Attached is a capture of both 3dsmax and Maya's UV editors, showing things like an infinite grid, a highlight of the [1,1] box, a highlight of the positive plane, color for the axis, and numbers on the axis
