3D View: View Selected (Numpad 0) Zoom based upon current view
The View Selected Key, Numpad 0 & Ctrl Numpad 0, both zoom so the largest dimension of the object bounding box fits 75% of the viewport.
Suggestion:
Fit the object outline (or bounding box profile) from the current viewing angle to 75% of viewport.
I understand this will take some calculations, but if done on the bounding box it is reasonable to accomplish.
If added as a separate behavior, the Alt / Numpad . combo is available by default.
Reasoning: When working with objects that have a high aspect ratio (a.k.a short wide rectangular solids, think train track rails), the "View Selected" action often causes a large zoom out response, rather than focusing in on the visible object profile. This is especially annoying when viewing the small profile of the object. The viewed face does get centered, but as a small region in the center.
The user then has to zoom in lots to see what they were looking for.
