Feed material output to the DISPLACE modifier ! so you can paint materials like in Mixer/Painter!!

Hi, It would open many doors if we could turn material displacement into actual geometry. One easy way to do this would be being able to feed a material output map to the DISPLACE modifier !

Thank you.

One of the thing it allows is then painting materials with displacement like in (recent update) of Painter. So you can do level-art or whatever texturing with relief, freeze your geo, optimize it, throw it in a game engine and you don't need expensive realtime displacement anymore. Etc. Thanks

Incredible, I just pondered the same thing yesterday! Cycles nodes are an engine which could be used not only to generate textures, but even transform/generate vectors and other variables. If there was a way to plug those textures and variables back into blender, that would open up huge possibilities.

There are plans to abandon the old blender texture system entirely and reuse the functionality in shader nodes. Also displacement baking in Cycles is planned.

Having an extra option for generated Textures would do the trick amazingly. Being able to choose "Shader Graph" as an option in the type drop down and this then using the Displacement input to get XYZ displacement. -- Sounds very powerful. Only problem I see are with Cycles-only nodes. The modifier would only work in Rendered view? It would have to give a warning, or be disabled. This is a great idea otherwise. Would make height map creation in the shader editor possible and displace geo in real time to work with - very powerful when then used in combination with openVDB Remesh modifier and such!

An option to automatically update the displacement modifier could be a good first step. Currently, any changes to an image in texture painting ins't updated in the displacement modifier unless the image is reassigned or the modifier is turned off and on.

* @northgoingzak * Sounds like a dependency graph bug that should be reported.
