Clear active object when deselecting (in all modes)
When deselecting it's very confusing that an object stays active no matter how you deselect,
it happens in the 3d view, collections, and in the VSE with the strips, but it doesn't happen at vertex level.
Please make it so that when you press A to deselect or click on the empty space in every editor it's left with nothing selected, it's really easy to be confused by this highlighting.

has this ever been resolved - it is a great annoyance
This is a long term behavior that's always been in Blender. Can you provide any specific examples where this causes unexpected things to happen while working?
* @Jason van Gumster * Long term behaviors in Blender are not always good decisions (see the name of this site, even)...
But just having a stray origin still highlighted in the viewport after de-selecting everything drives my OCD a bit crazy. (Same with having a semi-transparent object icon still semi-highlighted after de-selecting everything.)
* @eobet * That's understandable. Though I'd really like to know if the current behavior actually causes unexpected things to happen while working in Blender. I don't think I've ever encountered that situation, but it's certainly possible that I haven't done the specific thing that would cause that.
* @Jason van Gumster * I have 5 mesh objects selected. I deselect the active object. But it's still active because that's how the long term behavior functions. I enter Edit mode to work on the other 4 meshes and the 5th (deselected) mesh also enters Edit mode because it is still active even though it was deselected. That is unexpected and undesired behavior; a mesh that isn't selected should not enter Edit mode.
I edit my comment. I understood the problem. I saw the problem clearly in VSE. When we deselect everything, a track is highlighted with a white frame. In 3D Viewport and in Outliner I assumed it was useful, but what's the use? If I do not find utility, I will give my vote.
