I wish we can copy geometry nodes over files.

The basic "Copy and paste" feature doesn't work between different blend files. I can't copy nodes from one file to another directly. I have to copy the object itself. No direct or simple way to copy nodes across files.

If that's not possible, at least, we need to export and import the node set-up itself.

It's actually possible, but only within the same instance. Meaning, you can't copy paste between two different Blender files opened at the same time, you must copy from one file, then open the other file from the same window and then paste.

This limitation should be worked on, that'd be great.

That goes for all nodes... You can't copy-paste nodes between blend. files. And yes I also believe that this would be beneficial. But for now you can append and link them.

If this is going to be implemented then my preferred way is drag and drop.
Don't even need a clipboard.
Grab Node >> Alt+Tab to the other Blender instance >> Drop Node

This is essentially a dupe of blender.community/c/rightclickselect/gQfbbc/ as that functionality (which is the best way for node-based applications to copy node graphs from one place to another) would allow for this by default.
