Hotkey for Join Area
To my knowledge it's currently not really possible to assign a hotkey to Join Area. I find it takes too much effort to manually drag the little corners of areas to join them or to right click on the separator and choose Join Area.
There is a great way to Split Areas via Hotkey, and we can even choose which direction to split, after hitting the Hotkey. However, for Join area, if you assign a hotkey, it's only going to work based on those exact coordinates on the screen. So basically the hotkey is useless. Please give us the possibility to Join the area the mouse hovers over, by using a hotkey.

Brilliant idea, it's so fiddly trying to get your mouse into the correct place over a seam or in the corner (particularly now they've removed the small strip of diagonal lines).
FWIW, you can always right-click a seam between areas and bring up a menu to join them.
* @Jason van Gumster * anyway it will be much more easier to press hotkey or use menu than aiming pixels. The same way as we can split area. Menu option mean you can assign hotkey.
But this is rare action anyway, if layout tuned well. {attachment 6120429jpg}
I found this old script somewhere created by Pitiwazou and I ported it. So props to him. It works by pressing the hotkey while your cursor is hovering over an area, then you can move your cursor to the area you want to get rid of and click.

There's not a lot of feedback from the interface. When you press your hotkey, blender will lock up until you click again.
