Viewport's "Object Name Label" Improvements
In Object properties, you can enable the name of the object to appear in the viewport. Currently, this call-out floats very near the object center, and is just text, making it hard to read for numerous reasons.
I recommend the following improvements:
- Control font size
-
Control the label's position relative to an anchor, which could be:
- The median point of a vertex group (object must use the group)
- The median point of the entire mesh
- The object pivot point
- Control label's distance and x/y offset from the anchor point
- Control label's alignment: left/right/top/bottom relative to anchor (currently label is always on the right)
- Give the label a contrasting background & border
- Optional runner line from the anchor to the label (enabled by default)
- Control the label's colors: background, border, text, runner
-
Label Groups:
- Would appear in the Object Data panel like Vertex Groups do, just for deleting/renaming purposes.
- When setting up the label for an object, you can select from this list.
- Use these improvements to craft a nicer-looking default label style.
Extras:
- Ability to select an object by clicking its label
- Label's runner and border would match the object's active border color, even when not active
- Culling depth / X-Ray options (per Label Group).
- Interacts well with Bone appearance options (colors, curves, etc)
