All Materials Outliner

I was wondering the other day, looking at my scene filled with objects everywhere with different materials, if there was a better way of viewing all materials so that I could select the material from a neat little list, just like the outliner. You can get the outliner out and maximise the objects to get their materials but this can take some time, and the materials can sometimes be hard to visualise. So I'm proposing this, even though maybe the asset manager will solve this in the very near future, a filterable list of all the materials in the scene! The user would be able to select from list view to preview-view to help the people working in the node editor. I was thinking better even still to be able to select an option in the user preferences or outliner so that the previews or list of materials could be shown inside the node material editor itself, this could prove quite useful!!

Since I can't post gifs as a picture, the link for the presentation is here

lsscpp

there's a neat addon for this, that shows a list of all materials directly in the node-editor T-panel: github.com/gregzaal/Matalogue

+1 we have Matalogue yes, but integrated solution like this should be nice anyway.

FWIW, I've edited your post to embed and directly link to your animated GIF.
