to all who write something like: "new 3d cursor can work similar to the workplane" this is NOT right or you just do not know how work "workplane" in MODO. BEST what developers can do with 3dcursor is make he work like "action centers" in MODO. PIRIOD!
* @Bo Shi * As stated below the 3D cursor in 2.8 Already is a basic workplane just less intuitive IMO. I don't get why you're so triggered by this. If the guys in Amsterdam don't get to it someone else will just plug it in
I have long waited for this feature, and it seems now it's in 2.8, in a slightly different way.
New 3D cursor has axis. You can make it aligned to the surface normal when you position it with the new 3D cursor tool . (To adjust the option of Shift+LMB , you need to tweak the keymap options inside preferences).
After setting the 3D cursor on the object surface, we can set transform orientation to 3D cursor .
It's nice to see the transform orientation grid directly inside the viewport though. Nice addon!
* @temeddix * Actually, you can press ctrl+shift 7 (numpad) and it will adjust the camera to face whatever face/vertex/edge you have selected. So if you add a transformation orientation to a face or 3D cursor or what have you, then do ctrl+shift 7 you basically accomplish this MODO function. Not exactly a one button deal obviously, but you can mimic it.
* @daniellapalme * Oh I missunderstood this sorry. Yea, you can't get the grid in the orientation...sorry. At least you can orient the camera
Does this work on 2.91 lts?
Apparently the new 3d cursor can work similar to the workplane , it's a matter of better visualization, and messaging about the feature.
* @mike.r.bermudez * What I have not found out, maybe I'm missing it or maybe its not there, is how to better align the 3d cursor to the orientation of whatever youc click into (using the 3d cursor tool, or even the snapping option "3d curor to selected).
People are saying the 3d cursor can act as a workplane, and I can see they are technically correct, the functionality is there, but..... when you "snap" the 3d curos to anything its orientation seems to be fairly useless (it changes based on your view?) A workaround I've found is selecting a face, using shift+7 to align camera to selection (top view), and then using "snap cursor to selected feature". This actually produces a result like what I would expect the 3d cursor to do, now your transforms (if you set orientation to 3d cursor) behave in a way similar to a workplane.
It seems to me however that the "3d cursor tool" should align automatically and you'd be able to skip a step or two.
* @o.chabrand89 * maybe this will help Link
