VR Scene Presentation
Hi,
i'm an industrial designer and we are currently using unity or unreal for quick VR demonstators for our clients. But with heavy geo and baking lightmap UVs etc it would be just plain awesome to be able to do it all in blender and use workbench instead.
The current Scene inspection works great but misses just a couple of options to make it a solid alternative to the above mentioned engines.
I think a presentation mode with limited input from the controllers like navigation (basically walking around the scene + the ability to lock the Z axis movement to the height of the user (input from HMD and Ground Settings) would basically be enough to make blender a great alternative for easy to use VR demonstrators.
The university i teach at is using VR more and more as well. I can imagine that blender would bridge the gap between 3d development and Prototyping fairly easy - with less throuble - than unity or unreal would be. Easy VR presentation of 3d models would be a game changer in the education field.
Of course this all could be evolving - using the collision setting for VR as well. So that you can not move through objects etc..

As a 3D Artist and VR developer I agree Blender should ramp up it's VR capabilities considerably. I wouldn't agree that bringing CAD or any other 3D data into Unreal is a problem, DataSmith is simply awesome for this (direct frpom CAD or from 3dsmax). It automatically creates lightmap UV and if workbench quality is enough for you then you don't even need baking light.
