Mouse selection in Splash Screen

Mouse selection is something people have difficulties when starting blender for the first time.

On windows or else, the selection button is always LMB, on other softwares too (maya, max etc).

When new users try blender for the first time, they close it (I did it) and learn only on the web that they can change the selection button. It's too bad !

Blender fundation and experienced blender users prefer the RMB to select, on blender the keymap is made for it. But, why new users should have to change settings when experienced users know how to change it ?

When we start blender for the first time, we see the splash screen, we can change the preset, maya, max or blender. Why not add the selection button too ? Like that, new users can change it and experienced too.

Nobody loose !

Blender needs more users, more funds but something so trivial block people to use the software.

We have to make it as simple as possible ! Let's make blender great again ! lol

If you refuse to take the time to read the manual on the basics of the interface or watch a tutorial on the basics, then I don't see the point of wasting time on a new user that doesn't put forth any effort to learn.

Dropping yourself into any DCC never goes anywhere. It doesn't matter which software it is.

There's already a preset interaction drop-down menu on the splash screen. A better solution would be to fix/improve the presets.

I don't see any preset interaction except for maya and max, and this is not related, I use blender preset with LMB for the selection.

Then that ought to be an additional preset, not an additional button.

julperpub

An additional preset would confuse more the new users. The change would be made ONLY to the selection button, not to the rest of the shortcuts and configuration.

I completely disagree... partially because some of the presets completely contradict what a user might pick regarding LMB/RMB. That would be far more confusing.

I don't understand why you talk about preset. In the preferences it's not a preset and we should not have 2 differents representations of settings. And the RMB/LMB choice is not dependant of a presset. You choose a preset and then you choose LMB or RMB.

So giving the possibility to directly choose LMB or RMB is good for new users because a lot of them close blender because of that.

It's not a contest of whitch one is better it's to give the possibility to know that we can choose and to allows us to choose directly in the splash screen.

LMB/RMB selection is tied directly to the presets. Try it. If you go to User Preferences > Input and change the preset from Blender Default to Maya, the LMB/RMB selection automatically toggles.

Furthermore, giving new users that particular choice in the splash screen isn't helpful because they won't know to make the choice in the first place. If this were a first-launch, "set up your environment" kind of wizard, it might make sense. But on every splash? I'm extremely dubious about the usefulness for new users.

The choice of preset is on every splash and like I said earlier I use blender with LMB, I don't see the issue. Your argument is wrong, sorry.

Why refusing something that could help many people and gives blender more users ? I honnesly don't understand blender users, I don't ask for LMB as default, only having the choice.

And it's possible to hide the enmu property if the preset is on maya or max, keep it visible on blender. Not a big deal.

The choice already exists in presets and in User Preferences. And since the plan is already to move to a left-mouse interaction model as the default behavior in the future, this discussion is kind of moot.

We're very much in the realm of opinion here. We disagree about whether presets or an additional button is the best choice, but it's largely subjective. There's not an objectively better solution.

I didn't knew the plan was to put LMB as default, but that doesn't change anything in fact. It's not an opinion, it's giving people the ability to directly choose the selection button since it's the big bummer they have when starting with blender. They will never think to go in the preferences, I did not think it was possible and my friends/people on forum didn't too.

But since you are so disagree with what I said, I will stop that here, you can remove this post.

No need for removal. My opinion isn't the only one that matters (if it matters at all).

The problem with putting the option in the splash is that users won't know whether they want to switch until after they've started Blender (and bypassed the splash). When that happens, they most definitely will look for User Preferences... or documentation.

MrTheRich

Right, lets put it next to the "Make super photorealistic render" button and the "Make my art not suck" button. So no newbie can miss it. Heck lets put all of blenders buttons in the splash screen, so no-one can miss it.

Key and control preferences should stay where they belong, in the key and control preferences panel. It's not going to improve to put every convenient button on the splash screen.

emaillarrysnyder

I can't agree more, this would do a lot to get rid of the "blender is unconventional" myth that persists to this day. I see this as a "first impression", when a new user comes to Blender. The unnecessary change in options is already too advanced and does nothing but start off the relationship on a bad foot. Any remarks that argue, just read the manual and do some tutorials is naive.... why spend 5 hours to simply get in and click around?

lsscpp

I'd think of this as a first-launch quick preferences modal window/dialog

ChameleonScales

Cool idea. I would even center it and put it on top of the first option, or make it more visible in some way, so that newbies can't miss it.
