Proportional Editing - Proposal - Polishing
Hello guys,
So... It doesn’t make sense to me that proportional editing and proportional editing falloff is two different options, it’s all about one single tool. It should have an “activated/unactivated” icon, just like the snaping or overlay options
I suggest to change this options to one single button to activate the tool and one subpanel just like the overlay or snapping tool, where we can fill up with more detailed information.
This turns the proportional editing into one single tool, with no need for multiple shortcuts. Right now, Blender has “Alt+O” and “O” for activating multiple types of proportional editing. I understand that’s related to usability, but it makes no sense in the UI perspective. Blender should have only one shorcut for activating Proportional editing, the kind of tool should be chosen later.
Also, there’s need to update the overall tool.
I did this mockup here, I’m sorry for the lack of quality, this was quickly made in paint. As you can see, Proportional Editing has only one button to activate and one button to open up the panel, I added a few options to the panel:
I added three buttons to choose the falloff type.
- Projected (2D) - Works the same way as before.
- Linked Mesh - Change the “connect” option to something more related to other options, like select linked, etc.
- Global Effect - I don’t know if that’s possible, but since Blender has multi editing objects, it would be nice if proportional editing has effect globally at every object in the scene, or at least the ones which are selected. I’ve tried in last build and proportional editing only works in the last selected vertices of any multiple objects you select. You can move multiple vertices, but only the last one receives the effect. Probably needs a bit of recoding here.
- Use World Scale option, to set up the scale in real units or not
- Add “lock to axis” options into the menu, this increases discoverability and organizes things a bit, not enough people knows this is possible, it’s shown in the status bar, but it would be interesting if this was also configurable in the proportional editing menu, before using the tool.
- Finally, a Falloff curve and falloff curve presets, where you can set up your own presets.
I hope you guys understand my point, english is not my mother tongue heheh
Comments are welcome, thank you very much.

This looks good to me. The UI could be simplified a bit - for example the curve presets could be handled just like we do with curves elsewhere, but just having a row of curve falloff buttons.
The popover button could also stay as simply an icon to not take up too much room in the UI.
As for the Global Effect thing, that is more of a bug fix than a feature. Proportional Editing has some bugs for multi-object Edit Mode, which if fixed, would address this.
