Feature request: modifiers independent of objects

Feature request:

It think it would be very useful to have modifiers independent form objects, to be able to use one modifier for many objects, so that any change to that modifier doesn't have to be repeated for many objects.

Example: Having one subsurf for many objects, change the number of subdivisions for all objects at once.

Suggested feature implementation: New modifier type, which has only one parameter: A link to another object, where the modifiers behaviour then is the same as all the modifiers of the other object (in their current state).

I think of a modifier being just a set of parameters.

Note, the "ctrl-L" - link modifiers Method doesn"t actually LINK a modifier, but creates a copy, so the problem arises that a change to the original modifier does not affect the objects which are supposed to have that modifier being linked.

Sorry if this is a duplication.

Any feedback would be highly appreciated.

At some point in the past, modifiers were intended to be proper datablocks that could be linked and connected to objects like any other datablock (mesh, material, etc.). However, that was never fully implemented.

Maby with new collection system, some modifier will be able to influe on entire collection, maby that will work with new node modifier stack.

* @yoann softyoda * I think it is not possible as objects can be in several collections. So how to manage modifiers in a non-tree hierarchy of collections and objects ?
