Texture paint - List of improvements

Hello everyone,

I've been testing lots of painting programs, from the good old body paint to more recent ones like substance painter, and I have to admit that Blender 2.8 was the most comfortable to use for multiple reasons: navigation, simple interface and controls. I'm mostly into hand-painted textures, the same way you would paint an illustration, and Blender has great potential. Improving those tools would attract lots of 3D artists specialized in hand-painted textures for sure.

  1. Allow to select any object in the scene (from the texture paint tab), show its texture and paint on it right away. Currently, objects that are not selected are greyed out, and it makes painting on an object that was split in different part (example: a character on which the head and the body are 2 separate objects) very tedious.

  2. Layers

Photoshop layers compatibility would be a great achievement.

  1. Lasso tools for precise selection and masking.

  1. Brushes for obvious reasons. Hardness, spacing, shapes dynamics are very useful.

Also brush shapes obviously and be able to create brush libraries.

  1. Color wheel, the current wheel requires lots of quality of life improvements:

(Coolorus is a great example)

  1. Color mixer, this is nice to have but always a great tool for hand-painted artists:

  1. HSL slider, I'm always using this for precise control over my colors:

  1. Fix external editor in 2.8 (currently broken)

  2. Fix brush not affecting faces that are beyond a specifc angle even tho they're visible.

Thanks for reading.

I would suggest that you split this into separate posts so that they can be discussed and voted upon individually. Otherwise it's a grab-bag wishlist and isn't particularly helpful. Also screenshots of other applications are nice, but they're not nearly as useful as a mock-up of how you envision things to be in Blender's interface.

(sidenote: I took the liberty of formatting your text so your images show up in-line)

Some of these are duplicates, but all of these are good suggestions. Blender might benefit from a toggle between project-from-normal and project-from-view. From what I understand, Substance projects from normal, and Mari projects from view.

It might also be nice to create a Mari like paining interface since Blender's texture paint can be quite slow at times.

Layers in particular are doable with a few Cycles/Eevee nodes, and I'd like to see Blender ship with an addon that sets these nodes up for you automatically in the, and creates a slick UI in texture-paint mode.
