To Developers of GreasePen - Considering 2.8 And the Future

youtube.com/watch

I made this video in hopes that it reaches the Developers.

The animation tool "GreasePen" has the potential to be

the best, most inclusive animation tool for all styles of animation flavor.

I really look forward to hearing from them and taking these things into consideration

NOTE:

(I don't actually hate frame by frame animation. It's just a draining process that deters many from it's medium.

That being said, all could change after the Blender Grease Pen Tool)

This seems like more than one proposal bundled into one. It would be better to separate them so they can be addressed and discussed individually.

@Jason van Gumster:

TLDR Points:

  • Masked Generated Shaders that are Editable manually and keyframed with ease.

Perhaps make sub layers exclusive for shading and designed for masking. This could be great for texturing as well.

  • Bone rigging mechanics to mirror 3D options to morph layers

This is a tougher one but it has been done by people with scripts in moho. They were just demonstrated but never released to the community. Source: youtube.com/watch

Damn shame...

--No artifacts from masks (which is 100% feasible considering the use of generated shaders)

-Layer ordering switching tool that can keyframe as well

-Performance above all (I think this above all is the most important. From What I have seen, I don

That looks like cutout animation (which btw i don't like at all), something you can do in regular blender already, and afaik will be possible in Grease pencil, plus all the rest

Are you referring to my video or the video I used as an example?

But either way, you have good reason to hate the cutout look. Cutout look pretty static but its cost effective. I'm proposing a middle ground between frame by frame and cutout.

That being said, my intention wasn't to demonstrate the look of cut out in that video. The author was morphing his 2D plane with 3D bones. That was all I was trying to get at. The goal wouldn't be to to create more cutout effect. The goal would be to manipulate layers using bones that act like 3D bones then reduced the frames and edit them to come across as frame by frame

@monos.animations: I think your proposals are great, and I think the cutout animation is very effective too, loved the coa-tools addon in Blender 2.7. However, as Jason said above, you’re making a lot of proposals in one there. Your video is very long and kind of all over the place – you’re showing a lot of this other software, but I’m kind of confused by what you’d actually want for Blender. Maybe if you could make a shorter, precise video with concrete examples of what the grease pencil would need? That would be awesome!

Grease Pencil is in a very exciting stage right now, and I’m also wondering where it’s gonna go. (For example, I’d also love not only the ability to use bones, but some vector capabilities, similar to flash or after effects). I also hope that frame-by-frame animation won’t be the only thing it can do, it has a lot of potential for many things.

So, as a Blender user and animator, thanks for taking the time even though you aren’t a Blender user (did I get that right?). But it’s a lot in there, and there are so many proposals here, so I think a shorter, more concise proposal would go a long way – or you talk to a developer right away, as someone else suggested. I’d definitely love to see those ideas in Blender too!

man I do not come from the world of animation 2d but after seeing your video I voted for the proposal for you: D

@amonpaike:

Thanks my dude. I appreciate it! I am very hopeful for the future of using blender for 2D

@monos.animations: I think you should talk directly with Antonio Vazquez since he is currently developing greace pencil for blender 2.8 developer.blender.org/p/antoniov/

@monos.animations: another tip for you on 2d-3d combination .... youtube.com/watch

@amonpaike: I'll holler at him and see whats up. That vid you sent is really helpful. It only added to my hype XD
