3D Splines in Sculpt & Paint Modes (like 3D Coat has)

3D Coat has a great feature that allows users to paint or mask surfaces using 3d splines. The spline points automatically stick to the mesh surface and remain an editable bezier curve until applied. This allows for the creation of very precise shapes much quicker than painting by them hand. Having this functionality in Blender's sculpting and painting mode would be amazing for many use cases.

This is an old video now but it shows the functionality pretty clearly - youtube.com/watch

Hopefully Pablo Dobarro sees this and can do some of his magic! :)

The spline draw tool is very useful not only in sculpt buy also in edit mode.

* @johnpdelacruz26 * I've been using Blender for 7 years and I never knew about that feature! It's a shame it's only projected in 2d space but this will be super useful nonetheless, thanks! :)

I dream of this but for shading with nodes

* @Romain Guimbal * what do you mean exactly? Do you know you can manually paint black and white masks in texture paint mode and save them as a texture to use in the factor slots in your shader tree? Or maybe you just mean the precision/procedural-ness of doing it this way would be awesome?

* @ad.morris * yeah, I mean having the masks as vectors instead of pixels and editable in the viewport. Nowadays we struggle to define math functions with nodes if we want precision. It would open huge possibilities, I see it for npr and for rough but precise designing, without worrying about topology (for example for a car you make a quick subdivided box shape, then you draw every windows quickly on the surface). I think the biggest weakness would be that UV unwrap is still be needed (except is the system is really smart).

* @Romain Guimbal * Vector editing is very useful. It is like an essential part of 2d editing where photoshop has already integrated while gimp is still behind.

* @johnpdelacruz26 * yes, blender never been the king of vectors, but it could change. we often hear the community talk about it
