It'd be nice if you could make a plane infinitely extending.

Perhaps this could be one of the Overlay options. Instead of it being an actual Plane object,
When I add a Plane to the scene, I often just want it to be at the center of the scene, and be big enough so that it helps me see shadows and positioning of objects. It could just be an Extra object that can be enabled in the Overlays, just like the grid.

How would the geometry work for this? How could you do depth calculations? What about clipping? What benefit does this offer over a significantly large plane?

@Josephbburg:
I don't know the technical side, but I know Maya and Cinema 4D have this feature. The benefit is that you can easily have a floor and not have to make it outrageously big depending on the clipping of your camera.
