Automatically reload modified images/textures

If an image or texture has been modified outside of Blender should be able to detect this and automatically reload the texture. This would be useful and save a little bit of time every time you're texturing in software like Substance Designer/Painter or Photoshop and want to check the result in Blender.

I don't know how Blender works internally but potentially it could store the last modified date for every texture and check if the last modified date for any texture is newer than the stored last modified date and if it is then reload it automatically. This check could potentially be done every time Blender regains focus.

If there is a risk of this slowing Blender down then maybe this could be set up as preference.

I know there are some scripts to do these kind of things but in my mind this is a basic quality of life addition that shouldn't require external scripts.

This idea was marked as a duplicate of Auto update-reload external textures (when it was updated).

* @IIIFGIII * It seemed like a pretty obvious suggestion so I did try to search for it. Maybe I just used the wrong search terms but I went through a few pages of results but couldn't find anything similar so I decided to post.

A button for this would in the shader editor to update all image sources would bebe very useful indeed.

I wish!

It also sucks that it seems the only way to reload an image is to go to the shader editor and add the image there and the look in the sidebar and click the refresh button... and in my experience this NEVER EVEN WORKS anyway.

* @thinsoldier * Yeah, there should really be a much better built-in function for this. If you download the TexTools script you can use that to reload all images right in the UV-editor which is better than doing what you mentioned above or re-opening the scene/Blender, but there's still room for improving that.

* @thinsoldier * Pressing Alt R in the shader editor will reload all the images if you have node wrangler enabled

* @rc12 * I have it enabled. It doesn't work.

Alt+R while in Shader Editor works to update all images. But it doesn't update the viewport if you're in Cycles. Change the viewport shading then go back to Cycles and updated maps will show properly.
