Mirror pose must have adjustable center of symmetry
Mirror pose works through a rig\root bone center now which is very unhandy to use in a real animation production.
It is necessity to make center of mirroring pose adjustable.
It could be maybe a little box on the armature properties, where you can pick the mirror bone and axis
and when nothing selected it would be default to the top bone in the hierarchy.
Or it could be implemented maybe with using the 3D cursor for that
This feature will be really useful to have in other areas of blender like in sculpt mode (so you can change where the symmetry of the brush is happening for example

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure copy and pasting poses (and mirror poses) can be set to only affect selected bones. That gets you around the root bone problem pretty easily.
@Jason van Gumster: ok, try it. try to paste mirrored pose at the same place which is away from the root bone
Do you have some example?
@Santiago Shang: What example? What is wrong with mirror pose? It works through root bone only or center of rig, whatever. It is ok for cycles or for moving in one direction. But in a real production if you making common action shot you place your character somewhere in a scene by root bone, then you make run, turns, jumps, changing directions etc. and your root bone stays at the first frame all the time (except some special cases) so you need mirroring poses through the pelvis only and you have a lot of troubles if poses mirror through the root bone if it far away of your character
