Proportional Editing affect options

There are two things that I feel can be improved in proportional editing.

  1. The ability to not let proportional editing affect a certain part of an object- every time I want to edit only part of an object, I have to hide the rest of the object in editing mode. This isn't ideal- many times I have faced situations where I have to see the object completely while doing proportional editing.
  2. The ability to let proportional editing affect specific parts of an object- for instance, only faces. Or only vertices. There are many instances where I want only the faces moving upward in an object, but proportional editing works only on vertices- it does not actually affect the faces of an object. Interestingly, a solution to this already exists- I just take all the faces and make each one of them into a separate objects, and lo! Proportional editing works absolutely the way I want to. But converting every object with multiple separate faces into multiple separate objects and editing them and back into a single object is a big hassle.

I guess that would require a form of masking, but then: why not use the sculpt mode?

We call these "components". Thing is, unless you want to extrude and create new geometry (in which case, use extrusion), there's no way to move a face/edge without affecting its neighbor components.

Hm, sculpting is one idea, (I haven't used the sculpting mode for what I do, only about once or twice in the past three years) although, do we get control over how much distance a vertex is being moved? I can select a part of an object and move it a certain distance in a certain direction in editing mode, do I have that level of control in the sculpting mode? If yes, that'd be great.

I understand extruding does not actually affect proportional editing- it would be great if extrusion does affect- then moving the selected object's neighboring components would be possible too, right?

I agree

Can you give more details for point 1, as to what you mean by a certain part and how you propose it would work? The "Connected Only" setting restricts the effects to only geometry connected to the selection, if you didn't know. Are you looking for something like sculpting's masking system for restricting effects for geometry that is connected to the selection?

I'm aware of the connected-only option, and I use it quite frequently. But yes, I was actually looking for the masking system you mentioned, which restricts affecting the geometry that is connected.
