Save files somewhere other than /tmp

By default, .png files from an animation are saved in /tmp, and I can't seem to change that. Unfortunately, after a reboot, all of the files in /tmp were completely lost, so my entire 800 frame animation is gone, and I'm not sure if Blender was supposed to combine those frames into an actual video file but it never seemed to. Maybe Blender should save those files somewhere else, like in some directory in ~/.local, just to prevent file loss.

The temporary directory can already be customized in the file paths preferences .

That doesn't sound normal. AFAIK no OS ever clears that directory, and Blender definitely doesn't.

Arch Linux does clear /tmp after a reboot (tmpfs)

There is a solution for that but I cannot paste the website forum link - here is what they gave systemctl mask tmp.mount

Erm - there's a field to save a render where ever you want. A tmp directory is just (sometimes) the default, you shouldn't actually be using that unless it's quite intentional.

As I said, I couldn't change it, because I used the command line render and there didn't seem to be a option except the -o field which didn't work and instead just saved the files in /tmp anyways

It should work, but the temporary directory is used as a fallback if the output path provided is invalid (e.g. no writing access/rights, illegal characters, ...)

Yeah well it's honestly kinda a useless suggestion since one should be able to set the output path (I couldn't for some reason, so that would be more of a bug report) and everyone's sorta misunderstanding it so screw it

You should always set your output path correctly, I mean, thats the important part of a pipeline. You can set the default path in settings/File Paths

And no, Blender isnt automaticly create a video file when you choose a image format, thats the whole point of renderign to images.
