Animate textures

In Blender, we can directly draw textures on the objects. More recently, we can also make a 2D animation with the grease pencil. What about adding a system now to animate directly the texture in "texture paint" mod in the 3D View or in the UV/Image editor? Could be really useful.

This could really use a mock-up. How would this system work? Would texture keys be shown in the Dope Sheet? Would there be any expectation that Blender would interpolate between textures, or would the texture just be constant?

Otherwise, if really you need a mock-up, I can still try to think about it and make one (I just can't right now), but I really just thought of a kind of merging between the UV/Image Editor and the grease pencil animation tools, personally. ^^

I think I mock-up would still be helpful. At the very least, it'll will help clear up a lot of corner-case issues and design questions.

For what it's worth, you may want to have a look at Malefico's Blender Lightbox add-on . It gives you a lot of the facilities that you're looking for.
