In edit mode you click elements (vertex,edges or faces) to select.. Currently double click does nothing.

It does if you change your hotkeys. On my system, double-click does exactly what you request.
Blender doesn't like to follow the standards lol, otherwise it would be the default already. (literally every other 3d app works like that).
Fortunately you can easily change that in the keymap............
Can have sense in case exist function select all child (shift+g), then you can apply this shortcut to button, eg. mouses with 6buttons have this option.
