.STP import, FBX/OBJ darg and drop
Hi guys,
are you planning to add the STP import function to Blender? I work a lot with .stp sourcefiles and it's a real challenge to convert them into manageable fbx. I usually use Cinema4D for the conversion but it can't do topology as good as Moi3d for example, where you can freely set how many polygons the output fbx consists of.
I think many professional users would welcome this feature, as well as the drag and drop fbx/obj import.
Many thanks for the great work on Blender so far!!!
Cheers!

I've used basically every major 3D app throughout my career and I remember early on when I started using blender I tried to drag an FBX into the viewport and nothing happened...
This has been on my mind for literally years now, I really hope the blender developers enable dragging and dropping of other file types into our viewport, it's such a quick time saver.
There are add-ons available that can do this directly. The add-on developer should decide for themselves if they will support this add-on in a default Blender release.
Add-on for stp import or for drag and drop?
In my humble opinion such base things shouldn't rely on add-ons, but should be built into the source code. This sounds to me like a car manufacturer listing passenger seats as extras.
Blender's add-on management is already chaotic enough, and if you load third party add-ons, the add-on bar on the right side fills up quickly, and only the first letter of the add-on name is displayed, making it impossible to tell which add-on is which. So if I were the developers, I would try to make the system as transparent and simple as possible. Import and export features should have nothing to do with the add-ons. They should all be enabled by default.
Again this is just a humble request from a professional Blender user, who works with your software on a daily basis. I love Blender and I am endlessly thankful to the great team behind it.
Cheers
Agreed. Not looking for an addon. This seems like a basic feature for most 3d applications.
Perhaps we should split up this idea as I was only commented on the .STP support.
About drag and drop support: An import add-on should be able to register that they are able to handle certain file-types. Blender should automatically trigger that add-on. Need some changes to the API. Internal importers should do something similar.
