Non-destructive OpenVDB modeling

Hi,

I'd love to see a toolset for non-destructive OpenVDB modeling in Blender. Cinema 4D has quite a powerful non-destructive OpenVDB modeling workflow , but it gets slow when the mesh becomes a little more complex.

Maybe this could be a part of the 'Everything Nodes' project. That'd be great.

Thanks!

One thing to note is that once data is imported into Blender, it's no longer in that other format... it's Blender data. As such, Blender doesn't make distinctions between data that comes in as OpenVDB (or any other format) and data internal to Blender.

Downside is that something that's OpenVDB-specific isn't likely to happen. The upside, though, is that any non-destructive features added in Blender would likely benefit all data within Blender.

@Jason van Gumster: You're right. I personally wouldn't mind if it's not OpenVDB anymore once it's inside Blender. I'm aiming at the remeshing algorithms and a toolset to Boolean meshes into a remeshed combination with nice smooth transitions, like in Cinema 4D.

Extremely powerful feature. This feature can open new very useful field in Blender modeling tools. In the future it is can turn into to extremely useful and powerful voxel modeling tool like 3d-coat. I do not know what the status of this project but the same idea was voiced in farsthary.wordpress.com/2009/09/11/1166/

I'm pretty sure it will be :)

OpenVDB is open source, isn't it? It would be great to see their developers give Blender's a hand.

For now, you can emulate the behavior by using boolean modifier followed by remesh modifier set to "smooth".

Looks closer to metaballs actually.

@vitprochazka64: That's indeed a workaround, but OpenVDB has a better remeshing algorithm than Blender's Remesh modifier.
