Offset display length when one element selected.

When display edge length is enabled in the viewport lengths are always displayed at the exact center of each edge. When one edge is selected the manipulator is drawn ontop of the length making it unreadable as the manipulator is also drawn at the center of your selection.

This proposal would do a lot better with some screen mock-ups included. Where would this offset setting be in the Blender UI? Would it just be one value (+/- the normal of the edge) or would it have to be two values (include +/- along the edge)? Also, what units would the offset be in? Blender units? Real units? Percentages?

I think this proposal needs a bit more thought before it can be actionable.

Along the same lines as this the text itself sometimes blends in to the background as it doesn't consider surrounding values. With multiple edges the text doesn't scale to prevent overlap so you end up with a jumbled mess and have to zoom in really close to read. The text scale is currently linked to DPI and there is no option to adjust in settings (Text style does not effect it and there is nothing in 3D View section either). I know there isnt an easy fix to make everything readable all the time but it seems zooming way in is something I have to do often with measurement sensitive work. Perhaps if text closest to the cursor was made bigger and stuff further away smaller so the user can actively choose what to see.
