Scenes allow separate animations for linked objects

At the moment if you have a linked character between scenes you cannot have separate animation data between them. The only way is to duplicate the character which just causes a mess.

This has been an issue for YEARS! I can find decade old posts about this.

Especially with the new animation sequencing stuff in blender this should be fixed.

Minimums that would be helpful:

  • NLA editor is different per scene allowing you to assign animations that way
  • Actions can be set differently per scene

But I think the former is the most useful.

Since Blender 3 this is possible with library overrides. This is tech created for the Sprite Fright open movie. docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/files/linked_libraries/library_overrides.html

No that's linked from blender files, I mean linked between "Scenes". You can have multiple scenes in the same blend file, but to have different animations between them you need to duplicate any animated characters and objects. There's no override system for this.

The idea is I can have multiple scenes, and say keep the environment the same but use different animations on the characters with a different object and rendering/lighting setup all in the same file.

This would be particularly useful since you can make scenes assets now, so multiple scenes is encouraged but animating between them is troublesome.

The only way is repeatedly dragging in instances of the characters from the library. instead of having one instance with the animation or NLA track switching between scenes.

Honestly, it's this limitation of scenes that has made me wonder why anyone ever uses them at all.
