Export model based on scene units, not meters!
I want to be able to have my model units set at export based on my scene unit settings. If I am working in millimeters, I want 1 unit to = 1 millimeter. This works while in blender, but once you hit export, it makes 1 unit=1 Meter. Why?
Why this matters?
Many people are using blender in workflows that include sharing between CAD programs and 3D printing in real world scale. Modeling in mm or inch are standard units, but when printing your units are thrown way off. This is a difficult concept to teach and frustrates many new users, but also leads to costly errors. It would be intuitive for your export to inherit the scene units you set it in.
Current work arounds...
There are videos and articles suggesting setting your scene scale to .001 to avoid this. This works for import and export sizing between CAD and 3D printing, but breaks everything else about Blender. Physics are broken, lighting fall off is broken, cameras don't work as intended (dof, focal length, f stop, etc). It is a trade off we no longer want to have to make.
Second work around is importing at .001 and exporting at 1000. Again, this is not intuitive and leads to easy mistakes. It is hard to maintain across users. Add-ons can be created to only a certain level of usefulness as export and import are baked into blender main code.
Solution:
Exported models retain the scene units to set 1 BU. I.e. I am working in mm, so at export 1 BU = 1 mm. You are working in inch, so 1 BU = 1 in at export.
Perhaps there is a reason it defaults to meter, I can't see what it is though. And even if you still want meters as untis, then set scene units to meter, and at export you will get 1 BU = 1 meter.
Please adjust this!
Thank you!

We should be able to choose. It can be an option when exporting... Globally I like your suggestion, but I also see some cases it is better to export using the default meter.
When you say that, it looks like there is no way to do it now days (on 4.5) but you can also just scale your model.
