Prevent accidental render shutdown

If there is a render going and you press X button of the render view (the "close window" button, not the X key), the render stops and render window closes. This makes it too easy to accidentally stop an important render. I already did this, and after an hour of rendering it hurts, as you can imagine.

My suggestion is to create a prompt: "are you sure you want to abort the render and close the window?" before it shuts... Also, add an option in preferences, whether the prompt is going to show or not. The prompt would not be showed at all if the render has been stopped before by hitting ESC key.

Same could go with ESC key - maybe if a render lasts longer than 5 minutes already, we would get a prompt asking whether we're sure to abort a render or not.

Sure, a stopped render can be previewed and there are tricks to utilize the half-finished image by half-rendering it again and stitching the two images in post, but you know... It's a bit of clicking and tweaking. You cannot just resume a stopped render, so I wish that the rendering process would be somehow protected against accidental shutdown. It might not sound like Blender-style feature, but it would help absent-minded users like me.

Actually it will be more helpful if blender support "resume render". Rather to discard render cache immediately i think blender should keep it until we hit next render.

* @mrajendra2150 * I agree, this would probably be the best solution. But I actually don't know any rendering engine that lets you resume a stopped render. Do you know any?

* @michalpe * Corona renderer in 3ds max support resume render. I use it very often. Also Inside blender, Luxcore render support resume.

I like the way how Escape key works in some file managers - when copying big/slow file, if you press ESC - it pauses and asks: what to do (stop or continue), where the default buttons are - if you press ESC again, it just continues to copy :) So, if you accidentally press ESC (once or twice or more) while it's not finished, you don't loose your progress. Same could be about Render window. But some people may find it annoying (redundant confirmations) so it should be customizable, imho...

* @ErminOS * That's just how I would see this.

That's already a thing, if you have saved your file at least once.

* @-L0Lock- * You mean such a feature is already there? Not in my Blender.

Lauloque

* @michalpe * Yes, Which version are you using ?

You should have this whenever you try to close a project with unsaved changes: {attachment blender_2021-03-23_11h10min44sjpg}

* @-L0Lock- * Ok, I think I haven't described my request accurately. I meant closing the render window, not the project window. When you hit F12, Blender opens a second window and shows you rendering progress in that window. If you hit X in the right-top corner of the render window to close it, you'll still have your project open, but the render is shut for good. I want to prevent losing your rendering progress by that accidental hitting X in the render window.

Lauloque

* @michalpe * Indeed... Though to me it doesn't seem logical that closing the render view window stops the render, it's only closing a view window.

Like any background task, you should be able to open and close editors at will without any impact on the task. Including hitting F11 to bring it back or open the image viewer editor and load the render view in...

* @-L0Lock- * So you agree with me that current solution in Blender is not the best? Maybe the request shouldn't be to create a prompt but to keep rendering when the window in closed.

Lauloque

* @michalpe * I think yes.

mrajendra2150

* @-L0Lock- * I think Blender should implement ALT+F12 to stop render or any baking process.

* @mrajendra2150 * what is wrong with the Esc key ?

michalpe Author

* @-L0Lock- * Well, in the end of the day, nothing is wrong with any key. It's just that you cannot resume a render that you accidentally aborted. This should be the actual feature that will solve all problems of this kind.
