Deep render pass
To be used for serious VFX, Blender needs to be able to render deep data.
Currently at VFX facilities there's barely any CG rendered without deep data. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_image_compositing

Our client want to get the render images in deep exrs some times. It is pretty embarrasing to say that we can't. Definitely need this in Blender!
yeah.... makes us look like peewees and fools also. Blender needs this for it's renders to be considered in the industry.
still nothing? :(
I can't believe this still hasn't been addressed by the devs... Evee Next is nice, having a compositor is nice. But not having deep in cylces prevents blender to be taken seriously in our pipeline
It looks like Redshift is adding that to their Blender plugin . So if you use Redshift or interest to, I guess that will be a thing soon.
Now we have native deep render and light material aovs in my custom branch of blender github.com/RolandVyens/industrial-cg-platform
It's really sad that the Blender team does not show a slight hint of interest in such important feature, regulary requested by users.
Hopefully devs take a closer look at this. Deep Compositing is really a necessary function for a ton of VFX shots - especially if you want a high quality output where you can composite the layers together.
VFX Studios will jump onto using Blender from this feature alone.
2 years have passed and there's no hint of deep being implemented to Cycles. That's rather sad, to say the least. It's also sad to see Blender Foundation turnining into some kind of corporation - there is no way of contacting anyone, all sort of contact information has been removed from Blender website.
In Properties - View Layer - Passes - Data, chech "Mist". A new socket called "Mist" will appear in "Render Layer" node in compositor once rendered, which you can further tweak with other nodes
AFAIK that's not that.
While Mist or Z passes can be used to acces an object's depth, a deep render pass stores the depth of any object contained in each pixel. That includes objects behind.
Blend's current passes only will tell you the depth of whatever's on "top".

Mist or Z-Depth is something completely different that Deep data
yes, thats correct. Deep Exr stores every sample that a pixel receives, so if the pixel is receiving "mixed" info from something like simulated DOF, it can store every individual sample, so you will still have some of that data of what it is in front or behind.
