Sizing for name fields when possible, hover display when not -- click reduction
(IMO, "click reduction" is usually a desirable goal.)
For longer filenames, especially iterated file names that get version ##s tacked onto the end, often the fields dedicated to their display are too short for the full name, which may be critical. This applies even to window arrangements where there's plenty of space for a longer field to be displayed.
I propose that name fields become DYNAMIC, and resize according to space availability. AFAICSee, they are currently static, fixed length fields, and don't resize at all. I suggest they expand when possible to use up all the available space, or to some arbitrary length the devs pull out of a hat (how about 32 characters?).
Additionally, when the fields are smaller than the name they are displaying, I suggest a "hover" operation trigger balloon help that displays the full name of the current item. This will allow the user to see the full name without having to click on the dropdown.
