Derush workflow for VSE
Hello community !
Currently in the VSE there is no way of previewing video files before importing them in the timeline. I would like to suggest a new editor that would make standard derushing workflows possible in Blender.
-
In the File Browser, double clicking a video file would open it in :
-
Derush editor. This can be a new mode of the Movie Clip Editor (along with Mask and Tracking) but stripped down to the bare minimum :
-
A timeline that would adjust its length to match the length of the selected movie clip (instead of the scene Frame range). The current timeline of the movie clip editor is very limited as it cannot be zoomed. A timeline much like the sequencer but with only one channel would be ideal.
-
It would mainly show two sliders : one for In-point and another one for Out-point. Those would be reflected on the timeline with some kind of markers. Shortcuts for easy setup of those markers while scrubbing/playing would be best.
-
Once an in-point and an out-point are selected, a button would "drop" the rush at the current frame in the viewer on the first available track. (even better : support some kind of drag/drop). Internally this creates a movie strip based on the movie clip from the movie clip editor.
-
In the sequencer, double clicking (or hitting tab) on a movie strip would open its movie clip in the movie clip editor, and display the current in/out points so the user can watch what lies before or after the current movie strip. Modifying any of those would essentially be the same as moving a handle in the sequencer.
-
If the video icons in the file browser could be scrubbed like tiny video players, where the mouse position over the icon would scrub through the normalized length of the video, this would be a nifty plus, but I guess this requires some sort of pre-caching and would ruin Blender's speed.

If you want to try out what you're suggesting, have a look at the VSEQF add-on.
As a workaround scenes can be used as bins, to copy/paste into the main edit: youtube.com/watch
