What can Cylindrical Projections be used:
-
Planets Texture
-
Wrapping label for physical products (energy drink cans, cosmetic bottle, paper bag,...)
-
Reference image source: Wikipedia:
Footnotes 1:
-
I knew UV Sphere and UV unwrap method can be use in place of Cylindrical Projections.
-
However, in my opinion, a procedural Cylindrical Projections will be a good addition in Texture Coordinate vector socket because of how widely common use of this Projection method.
Update 1:
-
Thank to Zuorion information, I successfully make a Cylindrical Projections Mapping nodes base on CarlG's math.
Update 2:
-
I accidentally found out that Blender already have Separate/Combine - Cylindrical/Spherical node group assets, so I will mark this Proposal as Done.
-
With those node groups, I've successfully made better version of Cylindrical/Spherical Projection Mapping, this is the result:
-
01 - Cylindrical Projection - V Match Z
-
02 - Cylindrical Projection - Normalized
-
03 - Spherical Projection
Footnote 2:
-
My node use Attributes from Geometry node for better mapping.

Thank you so much, I tried replicate your complex math and it result is just the same. (I don't know why but there is 3 big seams even though I use seamless texture)
If this can be made out of existed nodes like what you demonstrated then it absolutely should have been in asset essentials library.
To be honest, i just googled and recreated it from this post.
It does in fact is not ideal solution, because it Blender texture nodes lacks DDX/DDY input there is 1 pixel artifact on seam, but in most cases its not noticable. But thats just technical feature that no one even requested in RCS.
Thank you! I did make a node setup that have better mapping and no seam base on CarlG's math (I don't understand the math but it work).
Hello! Just going back here to say I've made a better node base on Blender Separate Cylindrical group assets. If you want the node I can share it (somewhere else where I can post the blend file)
