Auto-switch Edit Mode on Active Object Change
Option: When selecting a different object in Edit Mode, automatically switch Edit Mode to the new object
[ Problem ]
When working in Edit Mode on object A, clicking another object B in the Outliner does not switch Edit Mode to B. Instead, Blender keeps A in Edit Mode and allows multi-object edit mode after pressing Tab (two times on object B), which is both unintuitive and error-prone.
This behavior causes frequent accidental multi-object editing and breaks focus when modeling or editing multiple objects.
[ Expected Behavior ]
When the user is in Edit Mode on object A and selects object B:
- A should immediately exit Edit Mode
- B should automatically enter Edit Mode
Only one object should ever be in Edit Mode at a time (unless explicitly using multi-edit tools or selecting multiple objects and hitting Tab or left column icon in Outliner (it also doesn't offer going from object to edit mode only other way)
This should happen without requiring the user to press Tab.
[ Current Behavior ]
Blender:
- keeps A in Edit Mode
- does not react to selecting B in the Outliner
- enables multi-object Edit Mode if the user presses Tab
This leads to accidental editing of multiple objects and workflow mistakes (like creating polygons on wrong object)
[ Why This Matters ]
Many DCC tools automatically move Edit Mode to the newly active object. Blender’s current behavior makes object switching during modeling slower and more error-prone.
A simple preference toggle could preserve existing workflows while enabling a much cleaner modeling experience.
Suggested Implementation
- Add a user preference: "Switch Edit Mode to Active Object on Selection Change"
When enabled:
If user is in Edit Mode and active object changes:
- Exit Edit Mode on previous object
- Enter Edit Mode on new active object
[ Benefits ]
- Prevents accidental multi-object editing
- Improves modeling speed and focus
- Aligns with expected DCC behavior
- Backwards compatible via a preference toggle
[Potential conflicts with existing tools]
- Knife project in edit mode.

Just put the cursor on top of the object you want to edit and press Alt+Q to switch....
@theredwaxpolice We are talking about the situation where you have empty mesh layers. Or one of them is empy mesh layer.
There is a button to do that in the outliner:
Yes, and:
a) to enter edit mode you need to click it instead of simply selecting other object. Larger space to click and identify already existing logic for when in object mode - object selected - we are editing selected - no option to misclick , user gets simpler logic
b) there is an inconsistency that you can go from edit to object by clicking it but not from object to edit
c) when you have object in edit mode and then you select other object - move cursor to the viewport - click TAB and TAB again - now both objects are in edit mode BUT polygons will be created not on the mesh you just selected and joined previous mesh in edit mode.
There is a drawback with this method. It's specific to the object type. If you are editing, for example, a curve, you can't click that dot and change to Mesh Object in edit mode. It's quite a lot of steps, as demonstrated in the OP and comments.
I understand that there might be some logic to not change the Edit modes "Type" (Mesh,Curve, GP, Sculpt) without specific user input, but in this case, it just makes things harder to achieve.
I find it would be much more straightforward if the Blender could automatically change to the corresponding edit mode when changing an object from mesh to curve, for example.
