Expose Location, Rotation, and Size of Viewport "camera"

Use Case

Location & Rotation

I can't model subdivs accurately with the visual noise of the cage lines obstructing the surface. So I often setup my workspace this way to have identical views of the object but without all the noise on one of them.

What would make this even better is if navigating in the left viewport was exactly reproduced in the right viewport so I always could see exactly the same thing in both. If the location and rotation of the "viewport camera" was exposed as a field, I could setup one viewport to be the driver of those fields in the other viewport.

Size

The reason why I want the size (width and height) of the information to be visible is because 100% of the time when I use "Align Active Camera to View" it is never anywhere close to what I wanted. In order to get what I want I need to:

  • measure the size of the viewport,
  • set the output resolution to match that size, and
  • set the Scene Camera to the same Focal Length as the Viewport Camera and then
  • use "Align Active Camera to View" .
  • and then for some reason divide the focal length in half (perhaps the sensor size used by the viewport camera also needs to be exposed?)

The Focal Length information is already exposed, so it makes sense to me to also expose the width and height (and maybe also sensor size).

Countless times I've found the exact camera angle I want for a render while looking through the viewport and then spent half an hour trying to get the actual render camera to be in the right location with all the right settings.

I'm not asking for new functionality. I'm asking for information that already exists to be exposed conveniently.

Yes I know I can add a camera and set both viewports to look through the camera and set one viewport to View Lock > Camera to view. I don't want the visual noise of the camera overlay and accidentally clicking the camera when I meant to click another mesh object and I don't want to have to add a camera and I don't want the inevitable forgetting to turn off Lock Camera to View days later and losing my camera angle. I just want to make a new workspace and setup the drivers between the two viewports and save it in my startup file.

Allowing the use of viewport numerical values as driver input is very clever idea! In addition to easily cloning the views it would allow all kind of interesting tricks where viewport actions affect objects.

Furthermore, to match the Perspective Transform you also need to see the Viewport Sensor Size if it uses anything like this.

Great ideea! For "Align Active Camera to View" can't the size and focal be matched automatically to viewport settings?

* @Ge Ro * Do you know how? I don't. There is no panel that appears after using the command with additional options.

* @thinsoldier * Sorry, the comment was intended as an improvement idea for this post or maybe a separate one.

I was about to write nearly this exact proposal. Every so often I keep digging around expecting to find this panel somewhere and am shocked it doesn't exist. The viewport camera location and rotation really needs to be exposed in a panel just like the 3D Cursor. imgur.com/a/7EaUr4W Image
